Beta Glucan and Vitamin C

On Monday I switched from NOW beta glucan to Transfer Point beta glucan. Based on (primarily in vitro) research of their ability to stimulate immune cells, Transfer Point is supposed to be better, if not one of the best brands. An added benefit is that it is available in 500mg capsules, whereas NOW is only available in 100mg capsules. As before, I am taking 500mg, three times per day.

I have heard and read that beta glucan should be taken with Vitamin C in order for it to work. For some reason I've always had trouble tolerating Vitamin C, so I haven't done this. But I figured I better take it now anyway and just deal with those side effects, because otherwise I might be throwing the money I'm spending on beta glucan down the drain, and this product is not cheap at all compared to the old brand and the rest of my supplements. I'm taking only 125mg of Vitamin C with each beta glucan dose, and that seems to be doable so far. I have had some mild signs of anxiety and nervousness already, but I can deal with them at this level, and just hope it doesn't get worse.

What's interesting is that today, I'm having a slight headache and those weird jaw spasms and TMJ issues are really, really flared up. This seems to happen whenever I'm fighting off viruses or stimulating my immune system. I think it's a good sign especially because I haven't had this type of reaction this strong in quite a long time.

  1. Hello CFSince98,
I am confused over all the immuno-stimulating you are up to now.Should we not just improve nk function rather than risk stimulating replication of nk,t-cells and b-cells in case xmrv is present and more virus means more symptoms?

  3. Toby, thanks for the spam. I will be sure to never purchase anything of Dr. Teitelbaum's.

Anonymous, sorry for not answering sooner. I don't think the immune stimulators I'm on will cause the NK/T/B cells to replicate and thus replicate more virus, but not knowing for sure, it's a risk I'm taking. There's not many options for treatment right now. If I get worse I can simply stop taking them.

  4. have you considered taking reishi or astragalus? Both have been shown to increase interferon alpha. I just recently started astragalus, I will let you know if I feel any positive benefits.

So far I seem to be experiencing a mild 'herx'.

Another product that seems to be beneficial for me is curcumin (using a good brand is essential here).

    Hope you're doing well.

    Regards,
