Possible herbal XMRV treatments

Previously I had been focused on finding effective natural treatments for what I believed was the cause of CFS, at least in my case--viruses such as Epstein-Barr and immune dysregulation. The news of an association between the retrovirus XMRV and CFS has given my efforts a new direction: looking for substances that have antiretroviral activity. Since I still believe Epstein-Barr plays a role, something that inhibits both herpes viruses and retroviruses would be of especially great interest to me.

Olive Leaf Extract: This is my stand-by that I've been taking since the beginning of the year. There's anecdotal evidence that it inhibits herpes viruses. Since then, I have read that it may also inhibit the reverse transcriptase and integrase of retroviruses. One study found that olive leaf inhibits HIV and is synergistic with HAART. Interestingly, this study found that olive leaf reversed virus-induced gene expression changes. There is also a patent describing the use of olive leaf to treat viral diseases. I will definitely continue taking OLE and may further increase the amount I'm already taking.

Bitter Melon: Bitter Melon contains an HIV inhibitor which has been named MAP30. It's hard to imagine that there would be side effects from something that is commonly eaten as food, which it is in Asian countries. The inhibitor seems to be found in all parts of the plant; fruit, seeds, leaves, etc. Here are two abstracts of research articles discussing this:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11458453
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1699801

Phyllanthus niruri is an herb that is found to inhibit several hepatitis viruses and retroviruses. There is a patent "Method of treating retrovirus infection" that discusses using phyllanthus and claims it is effective in vivo against several retroviruses. There is also a peer reviewed paper, "Concerted inhibitory activities of Phyllanthus amarus on HIV replication in vitro and ex vivo". Among other research conducted, they administered a water/ethanol extract of phyllanthus to volunteers and anti-HIV activity of their blood was demonstrated.

Turmeric (curcumin) and ginger. Both of these are anti-inflammatories and may reduce viral replication through the inhibition of NF-Kappa-B. Curcumin may have real antiviral properties as well.

Hypericin and Cichoric acid: Hypericin a component of St. John's Wort that has been shown to have antiviral effects in vivo. However, the amount of hypericin available in herbal supplements is extremely small (on the order of 1mg or less per capsule) and such a small amount is unlikely to have an effect. There is a similar problem with cichoric acid (sometimes spelled chicoric acid), a virus inhibitor found in echinacea. The highest amount of cichoric acid in echinacea supplements that I could find was 4mg.

  1. I just happened upon this site as a result of a Google search for "Immunovir". I read through the 2009 posts with interest. My story is so much like yours except I'm older and have been pursuing remedies for a decade longer (21 years to your 11). In recent years, I was focused on lyme disease and its coinfections and was on cocktail after cocktail of antibiotics. This did not prove to be the answer for me. Like you, I feel that I have never been quite right after a high school episode of mono. It would not surprise me at all if viruses were to be at the root of our symptoms... or whatever predisposed us to be vulnerable to the viruses in the first place. I am reticent to take Valcyte but am so ready to feel better. I will be very interested to follow your efforts. I wish you full and lasting success!

  2. Green tea inhibits HIV binding with CD4 in in vitro studies and it seems a normal amount should be fine. Green tea active components are several times better absorbed with an acid drink, it has been documented with lemon juice. Also, it seems to potentiate antibiotics (*2 *3) and increases their spectrum. It also has antiviral properties on its own.
some pretend it can help decreasing the HIV viral load but it is not documented.

  3. LDN + olive leaf extract seems to help with the HIV viral load too.
